The New England Patriots played their final 10 games of 2020 without their No. 1 wide receiver and that actually might be a sign of things to come next season and beyond.
Veteran wideout Julian Edelman, who turns 35 this year, played in just six games and underwent minor knee surgery in October that ended his campaign. He has a potential opt-out in 2021 entering the final year of his two-year, $15.5 million contract extension.
Edelman got people talking after he dropped this below tweet:
Edelman could be hinting at retirement or simply moving on to a different team.
According to Spotrac, his remaining deal carries a $6.67 million cap hit in 2021 and a $2.67 million dead cap hit, meaning he and the team could part ways without a significant financial liability.
The team posted a disappointing 7-9 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. It is very apparent that the Patriots are in full rebuild mode and Edelman is surely not part of that.
