Earlier this offseason the Dallas Cowboys traded for veteran and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore to tandem with Trevon Diggs and shore up their back end. They also chose cornerback Eric Scott Jr. out of Southern Mississippi during the NFL Draft. It is being reported that these two acquisitions could make one former highly paid starter expendable in Dallas.
Jourdan Lewis, who has spent his entire six-year career with the Cowboys and has been a key contributor to their defense may have lost his starting position, or even worse, his job altogether as he is looking like a prime candidate to be cut before the season begins. Lewis is coming off a season where he only appeared in six games before being sidelined for the rest of the season with a lisfranc injury.
2022 5th round pick DaRon Bland had a breakout rookie season with the Cowboys, appearing in all 17 games and recording an impressive five interceptions and right now is the lead candidate to be the starter at the nickel position. It appears that Lewis’ spot on the team is in serious jeopardy at the moment and Cowboys fans have been weighing in on his future with the team via Twitter:

With the NFL become very pass-heavy in recent years, it is often said you can never have enough good cornerbacks on the team. However, with that being said, there is only so much money to go around and the Cowboys would save $4.7 million against the cap by releasing Lewis. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next several months.
