It has been almost two months since Cam Newton was released from the Carolina Panthers after nine seasons and he still remains unsigned in free agency.
Following his release, his name has come up several times as a possible suitor for the New England Patriots. Yet, there has been little to no traction for the three-time Pro Bowl signal-caller from New England.
There seems to be a reason for that.
The Athletic reported that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels wasn’t “necessarily high” on Newton when he spoke to the Panthers about their head-coaching vacancy.
Ouch.
Newton took the Panthers to a Super Bowl in 2015 after going 15-1 and he was the league MVP, but he does turn 31 later this month and is coming off an injury filled 2019 season that saw him play just two games.
All signs point towards the Patriots settling for Stidham as the starting QB. The Athletic reported that Newton would rather wait for an injury and become a replacement than settle for a backup role.
