An AFC head coach is reportedly in danger of losing his job.
According to a report from Diana Russini of The Athletic, some around the league believe that Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach Josh McDaniels could be let go if his team “doesn’t start” stringing together some victories:
“There have been whispers around the league that Josh McDaniels could be in trouble if Las Vegas doesn’t start winning, so this team is in win-now mode. Look for Las Vegas to get into the pass rusher market after releasing Chandler Jones. And league sources say they are trying to trade receiver Hunter Renfrow, whom they have used minimally this season.”
This certainly isn’t surprising to hear, as the Raiders have taken a noticeable step backwards under McDaniels. He inherited a team that went 10-7 and qualified for the postseason under interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, who curiously wasn’t brought back after the 2021 campaign.
The Raiders went 6-11 last season and are 2-3 entering tomorrow’s game against the New England Patriots. Las Vegas’ two wins have come against a pair of losing teams in the 2-3 Green Bay Packers and the 1-55 Denver Broncos, and both were decided by a single score.
McDaniels’ first NFL head coaching gig was with the Broncos, which spanned from 2009 to 2010. He was fired after a 3-9 start in 2010, finishing with an 11-17 record with the AFC West club.

The 47-year-old McDaniels was on staff for all of the New England Patriots’ six Super Bowl-winning championship seasons (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018), with the latter three coming while he was the offensive coordinator.
After hosting the Patriots, the Raiders will visit the Chicago Bears before taking on the Detroit Lions on the road one week later.
