Josh McDaniels reportedly learned of his firing from the Las Vegas Raiders in a rather sad manner.
Last week, owner Mark Davis fired McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler following a frustrating Monday night loss to the Detroit Lions that dropped Vegas to 3-5 on the season. McDaniels and Ziegler were replaced by Antonio Pierce and Champ Kelly, respectively.
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, McDaniels’ kids had finished trick-or-treating on Halloween night last Tuesday when he called to tell them the news:
“Josh McDaniels called his kids home from trick-or-treating Tuesday night to break the news. He had just been fired as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
The tenor of a fun Halloween night had quickly spun into the cold reality of the coaching business.”
McDaniels and Ziegler came over to Vegas in 2022 after lengthy tenures with the New England Patriots, where they won a combined nine Super Bowls (six for McDaniels, three for Ziegler). The duo took over a Vegas team that was coming off a 10-win season as well as its first playoff appearance in five years.
But McDaniels and Ziegler were never able to replicate the success they both enjoyed in New England. The duo leave Sin City with a disappointing record of 9-16.

This is nothing new for McDaniels, who was fired in the midst of the 2010 season by the Denver Broncos. McDaniels was also in his second year as their coach at the time, and he left the Mile High City with a lackluster 11-17 record.
The Raiders won their first game under Pierce on Sunday, dominating the New York Giants 30-6 to improve to 4-6 on the year. Las Vegas will try to make it two in a row when they host the New York Jets this Sunday.
