One day after ending his holdout by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, Josh Jacobs has also decided to change his jersey number.
More than a month after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a long-term extension, Jacobs and the Raiders managed to settle on a one-year deal worth up to $12 million. The reigning rushing champion will also have a new jersey uniform to go along with his new deal.
The Raiders’ official X account shared a video of Jacobs’ jersey, which now features the No. 8 instead of 28. The former digit is the one that Jacobs wore during his college days with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
After the 2020 NFL season, the league altered its jersey numbers rules which expanded the digits that players could wear at each position. Previously, running backs could only wear numbers between 20 and 49, but they can now go from 0 to 49 and 80 to 89.
Jacobs wore No. 28 in each of his first four seasons with the Raiders before making the switch to No. 8. A year ago, he led the NFL in rushing with 1,653 yards to go along with 12 rushing touchdowns.

Teams had until July 17 to reach an agreement on a long-term extension with the player they handed the franchise tag to. Along with Jacobs, two other star RBs in Saquon Barkley (New York Giants) and Tony Pollard (Dallas Cowboys) were unable to reach multi-year deals with their respective teams. Barkley and Pollard will also play 2023 under the franchise tag.
