Las Vegas Raiders’ star running back Josh Jacobs posted a mysterious message on Twitter amid his contract dispute with the organization.
Ahead of free agency, the Raiders placed the franchise tag on the reigning rushing champion. The two sides have until July 17 to reach an extension on a long-term deal, otherwise Jacobs would play 2023 under the franchise tag. Just as importantly, he’d be eligible to enter free agency after next season.
On Saturday, Jacobs posted a tweet that seemed to indicate that he’s taking a stand for future NFL running backs as well amid the contract dispute.
It’s been a difficult offseason for NFL running backs, to say the least. Dalvin Cook, a four-time 1,000-yard rusher, was released by the Minnesota Vikings in a cap-saving move on Friday.
Two-time rushing champion Ezekiel Elliott was also let go by the Dallas Cowboys in a cap-saving move back in mid-March. Now here we are in June, and the soon-to-be 28-year-old remains unsigned.
So it’s easy to understand why Jacobs wants to take a stand for others. It may be a devalued position, but top RBs like Jacobs, Cook, Derrick Henry, Nick Chubb and Christian McCaffrey are still among the NFL’s most prolific game-changers when the ball is in their hands.
