The Las Vegas Raiders and star running back Josh Jacobs were unable to reach an agreement on an extension before Monday’s 4:00 p.m. deadline.
If Jacobs reports to the team, the 2022 rushing champion will play this upcoming season under the $10.1 million franchise tag. Perhaps just as importantly, this means he’ll be eligible to enter free agency next year.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Jacobs and the Raiders were rather close to reaching an extension. Pelissero reports that Jacobs and teammate Maxx Crosby stayed in a car together at the team facility, hoping an extension would be finalized.
As Pelissero also noted, Jacobs isn’t required to show up at team training camp since he hasn’t officially signed the franchise tag.
Jacobs isn’t the only star running back who was given the franchise tag and unable to agree on a new deal with his current team. Tony Pollard (Dallas Cowboys) and Saquon Barkley (New York Giants) will also have to play 2023 under the franchise tag if they report to their clubs.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Jacobs led the league with 1,653 rushing yards last season. He rushed for 12 touchdowns and added 53 receptions for 400 receiving yards. For his career, the Alabama product and 2019-first round pick has 4,740 yards and 40 rushing touchdowns.
The Raiders will open their 2023 season with a road game against the AFC West rival Denver Broncos on Sept. 10.
