A massive trade proposal has the Indianapolis Colts sending disgruntled running back Jonathan Taylor to one of the primary Super Bowl 58 favorites.
Over the weekend, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the 2021 rushing champion requested a trade following a meeting with Colts’ owner Jim Irsay. Taylor is entering the final year of his rookie contract.
Taylor has been one of the NFL’s most prolific running backs since his 2020 rookie year. He crossed 1,000 yards rushing in 2020 and 2021 (a league-leading 1,811 yards in the latter year) and still had 861 rushing yards last season despite missing six games.
Cody Williams of FanSided offered an enticing trade proposal that has the Colts sending Taylor to the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for 2024 second and 2025 fifth-round draft choices:
“The fact of the matter is that Kansas City, barring catastrophe, isn’t going to have highly valuable draft picks. Instead, they are sure to be picking at the end of each round, especially if they can go back-to-back as Super Bowl champions.
While I refuse to believe any NFL team is trading a first-round pick for a running back in this economy at the position, a second-rounder is feasible, particularly for a team like the Chiefs who will all but surely be selecting outside of the Top 50 when it comes to Round 2. Having said that, that could require Brett Veach and Kansas City to pony up an additional future Day 3 pick in order to get a trade done, but that would still be worth it.”
2022 seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco was Kansas City’s leading rusher last season with 830 yards. Three years earlier, they won Super Bowl 54 even though Damien Williams was the lead rusher with just 498 yards.

Under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have consistently gotten by without elite running back production. But still, adding an all-world RB like Taylor would only enhance their chances of repeating as Super Bowl champions.

The regular season is just over a month away, so the Colts still have time to figure out the best course of action for Taylor.
