Former Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders’ and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden is back in the NFL…at least temporarily.
Per Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate, Gruden visited the Saints’ training camp session with quarterback Derek Carr, whom Gruden coached with the Raiders from 2018 to 2021.
Duncan added that Gruden is “a non-paid observer” for the NFC South club this weekend.
Gruden visited with the Saints back in late May to help provide some input on the new Carr-led offense in New Orleans. The Saints are coached by Dennis Allen (another former Raiders’ head coach), who’s entering his second year on the job after previously serving as the defensive coordinator under Sean Payton.
After a decade away from coaching, Gruden returned to the Raiders on a 10-year deal worth $100 million following the 2017 season. During the 2021 season, emails written by Gruden that contained homophobic, racist and misogynistic language were leaked.

Gruden resigned following the email leaks, stating that he didn’t want to be a distraction to the organization. Rich Bisaccia finished the season as the head coach and led the Raiders to their first playoff appearance in five years.
In his two tenures as the Raiders’ head coach, Gruden compiled a record of 60-57. In seven years with the Buccaneers, he went 57-55 and led them to a Super Bowl 39 championship.
