Johnny Manziel reveals that he once attempted to take his own life after a series of public scandals and personal struggles. This was revealed in an installment of Netflix’s Untold documentary series.
In the 111-minute production, the layers to Manziel’s life are peeled back, and he opens up about everything from his early life, to his college days, to his short NFL stay with the Browns, until the present day where he is viewed as an all-time bust.
Manziel opened up about being bipolar and how he contemplated committing suicide.
“I got diagnosed as bipolar and I felt like it was the same as being called an alcoholic or a drug addict,” Manziel said. “I think I was just running from problems. It was probably a $5 million bender. Direct self-sabotage, trying to burn this thing down. I had planned to do everything that I wanted to do at that point in my life. Spend as much money as I possibly could and then my plan was to take my life.”
Despite how fans once felt about him, they are sending prayers to him over this news.

Formerly known as “Johnny Football” by fans, the once-promising quarterback whose career was derailed by controversies recalled the darkest days of his life as soon as he got drafted.
“When I had gotten everything I’d ever wanted, I think I was the most empty that I ever felt inside,” Manziel, 30, shared in the episode. “I think I was trying to suppress how I felt and get out of being Johnny Football.”
After being cut by the Browns, he was accused of hitting and threatening ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley.
The former NFL quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner also got divorced from model Bre Tiesi after cheating allegations surfaced. Tiesi filed for divorce from Manziel in Dec. 2019 after they started dating in 2016 and were married in 2018 before splitting one year later.
At the time, Manziel was coming off a stint with the Memphis Express in the now-defunct AAF. The ex-Texas A&M star has since made sporadic appearances in the CFL, AAF, and FCF.
