It’s been more than eight years since Johnny Manziel last took an NFL snap, but recent social media activity suggests he’s not fully giving up on the possibility of a return.
On X/Twitter, Manziel posted an interesting message that emphasized one isn’t an NFL draft “bust” until they’re actually retired. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner ended the post with the words, “Do with that as you wish.”
Manziel was released by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 offseason after a disappointing two-year stint with the company. “Johnny Football” had brief stops in the CFL and the now-defunct Alliance of American Football league before the latter ceased operations in 2019.
The Texas A&M product was widely viewed as a boom-or-bust prospect heading into the 2014 NFL Draft. The Browns selected him 22nd overall in 2014, but porous play and off-the-field issues quickly derailed his career after just two seasons.
Manziel went 2-6-0 in his eight starts with Cleveland, completing 57.0 percent of pass attempts for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns and as many interceptions.
