Johnny Manziel will not be playing in the National Football League now or anytime in the future.
In a recent interview, the former Cleveland Browns first-round pick revealed that his professional football career is over.
“I don’t have the drive to play football at a high level anymore,” Manziel told ESPN. “I don’t have a drive to be the best football player anymore that I used to have in my life, and I’m OK with that. I’ve come to terms with what my football career was, and what it is, and now I’m trying to figure out how I can stay entangled in the game, but from a different position.”
On Friday, the sports world learned that Johnny Manziel will return for his second season with Fan Controlled Football. Unlike in the pros, he feels no pressure to carry the league.
“[FCF] is not trying to build this on my back and make me be the main focus point,” he explained. “I feel like I’m simply there to help bring a little bit of magic and a little bit of entertainment, but on a way different scale than the past.”
The former Heisman Trophy winner only spent two years in the NFL before the Browns cut him from the team.
After a brief stint in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes, Manziel signed with the AAF’s Memphis Express. However, the league folded shortly after. He wouldn’t try his hand in the XFL, which suffered the same fate as the AAF because of the pandemic.
