The Buccaneers are down to two quarterbacks. Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the team has parted ways with a veteran on the team.
According to Rick Stroud, the Buccaneers are releasing QB John Wolford.
Wolford was brought in as the team’s third quarterback in camp behind starting QB Baker Mayfield and backup QB Kyle Trask. He was brought in due to his knowledge of new offensive coordinator Dave Canales’ system, and he certainly displayed that in practice and in preseason.
He actually had a good preseason playing against the Pittsburgh Steelers and a few snaps against the New York Jets before he suffered a neck injury that saw his remaining action limited. His neck injury landed him in the hospital during the team’s second preseason game, but was able to return to practice last week.
During preseason, he went 14-for-21 for 168 yards and threw a touchdown pass.
He was hopeful he showed the Bucs enough for them to keep three quarterbacks, but that was not the case.

The Bucs are possibly hoping Wolford goes back to the practice squad, but with his preseason performance and experience, teams will be quick to claim him on waivers. Should Wolford not clear waivers, the Bucs could pick up another quarterback option for the practice squad.
In 2022, Wolford appeared in three games for the Rams and completed 38-62 pass attempts for 390 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.
