An actor has been selected to play the iconic John Madden in a movie, but some fans don’t think he’s the best fit.
Madden is one of the most legendary figures in football, having coached the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl while also leading them on multiple runs in the playoffs. He would transition to broadcasting after his coaching career and excelled at that too.
While he’ll go down as one of the best coaches and analysts football has ever seen, Madden’s name has been immortalized by its attachment to EA Sports’ football videogame, which has been one of the best-selling titles and most popular games for over 30 years.
Despite the rife criticism the publishers face every year, fans keep on buying the annual iterations and the trend doesn’t seem like it will ever slow down. The title’s popularity has led to a movie idea, so we’ll have a Madden biopic soon enough.
According to Deadline, Will Ferrel is in talks to play Madden in the upcoming film.
“Will Ferrell is in huddling to star as the NFL’s John Madden in Madden, a theatrical feature to be directed for Amazon/MGM by five-time Oscar nominee David O. Russell (American Hustle), multiple sources tell Deadline,” the publication announced on Friday.

While some fans love this, there are many of them who disagree and think the role should go to Frank Caliendo.
Ferrel hasn’t been confirmed to play Madden as yet, but the likelihood is that he will.
