Jimmy Garoppolo may be on his way out of town real soon. With the regular season quickly approaching, a decision regarding the veteran quarterback’s future is on the horizon.
The 49ers are just two weeks away from owing Garoppolo all of his salary for the season. His salary becomes guaranteed if he is on the roster come week one of the regular season.
Both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch spoke about Jimmy Garoppolo on Monday. Lynch acknowledged that the 49ers will have to make a decision in the near future, saying “Yeah, you know I think we’re getting pretty close.”
Lynch also added that no teams have made any deals that would make the 49ers want to move on just yet. He said “No one’s presented something that would make us jump, as of now. Not much has changed. The options are open, but like always, having some sort of a deadline tends to force action on these things. If not, everything’s open.”
Shanahan acknowledged Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery but claims that the quarterback is back to normal. Shanahan said, “I communicate with Jimmy all the time. He looks the same as always. He looks really good, looks exactly the same.”
Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason and has since been rehabbing in hopes of finding his next opportunity.

Despite what Lynch said, an NFL insider is singing a different tune.
“Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers, obviously he is not their future quarterback, they’ve made that abundantly clear it’s going to be Trey Lance,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport began.
“Are the 49ers going to be able to trade him and his 20-plus million dollar salary? My understanding is a trade partner as of right now, absent of a quarterback injury, does not exist. The 49ers’ options, and they’ve made this very clear, including recently through the comments of general manager John Lynch last night, options are either to cut him or somehow, some way, keep him on the roster. We will see which way they end up going, but an answer must come pretty soon,” Rapoport added.
Garoppolo threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in ’21 during his 15 games played.
