Last month, the country found out about the shocking and unexpected death of John Clayton.
He was 67.
Clayton’s wife, Pat, and sister, Amy, took to his Twitter account and posted a letter to show appreciation for those who conveyed grief and honored Clayton over the past few weeks.
“We are humbled and awed by this worldwide outpouring from those upon whom he had an impact,” Pat and Amy wrote. “Knowing we share this loss with you gives us comfort as we adjust to a world without ‘The Professor.’ John’s unique brand of knowledge of both the game of football and NFL rosters was legendary, and his many accomplishments in the field of journalism made us proud.
“His legacy will live on in his family, friends, and fans who continue to remember and share the many ‘JC stories.’”
Clayton, nicknamed “The Professor,” was one of the country’s foremost NFL insiders in a five-decade career that included over 20 years with ESPN.

The native of Braddock, Pennsylvania began his career in 1972 as a teenager covering the Pittsburgh Steelers in a season that included the “Immaculate Reception.”
His work ethic went almost until his final day on earth as he broke down the Seattle Seahawks’ blockbuster trade of Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos for Seattle Sports 710 AM just ten days before his untimely demise.
