The jersey that San Francisco 49ers’ legend Joe Montana wore in two of his career-defining games has fetched a record price at auction.
On Wednesday, the Goldin company announced that the jersey Montana wore in Super Bowl 19 and Super Bowl 3 has sold for $1.212 million. This officially sets the record for the most expensive NFL jersey ever sold at auction.
Per ESPN’s Dan Hajducky, the previous record for the most expensive football jersey sold at auction was a 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Tom Brady jersey. That piece of memorabilia sold at auction for $480,000.
In Super Bowl 19, Montana and the 49ers soundly crushed the Dan Marino-led Miami Dolphins by a score of 38-16. Four years later, Montana’s last-minute touchdown strike to Joe Montana lifted the 49ers past the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16.
That marked the 49ers’ third Super Bowl championship of the decade, cementing Bill Walsh’s team as a dynasty. Montana and the 49ers would win the Super Bowl again in the 1989 season, crushing John Elway’s Denver Broncos by a final score of 55-10.
Before Tom Brady reeled off four more Super Bowl wins between 2014 and 2020, many regarded Montana as the greatest quarterback of all time. Montana won all four of his Super Bowl contests, and he didn’t throw a single interception in either of those games.
