The ultra-demanding career of being an NFL quarterback wasn’t enough to prevent NFL icon Joe Montana from contacting his wife during games.
In an episode of the “Joe Montana: Cool Under Pressure” television series, the four-time Super Bowl champion and his wife, Jennifer, recalled a heartwarming moment where he called her from the sidelines during a game.
Apparently, Joe would check to see if there was an outside line at the stadiums. He then would call Jennifer to let her know that he loved her.
Joe and Jennifer got married in 1985, and they have four children together — two sons and two daughters. Joe was previously married twice.
Montana was drafted in the third round, 82nd overall, by the San Francisco 49ers back in 1979. He turned the 49ers into the golden standard of football during the ’80s, leading the team to four Super Bowl championships during his storied career.
The 1989 and 1990 league MVP missed all of 1991 and the majority of 1992 due to injury, and Montana lost his starting job to another future Hall of Famer in Steve Young. The 49ers wound up trading Montana to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993, where he’d enjoy two more quality seasons before retiring in 1995.

The controversial move to choose Young over Montana worked out for the 49ers, to say the least. Young would lead them to four NFC Championship Game appearances from 1992 to 1997, and to a Super Bowl 29 championship in the 1994 season. To date, that remains the 49ers’ most recent Super Bowl championship-winning season.
