A star AFC running back is not having the best offseason, with legal troubles mounting while a pay cut reportedly looms.
Joe Mixon has been in some bad press since the end of the 2022 season and was the subject of a recent investigation after a teen was shot near his house. While he was cleared of wrongdoing, the Cincinnati Bengals RB has had an aggravated menacing case filed against him and could be in some legal hot water.
Now, it’s being reported that the 26-year-old will have to renegotiate his contract and accept less money if he wants to remain with the Bengals. Mixon has a base salary of $9.4 million due in 2023, with $9.7 million set to come to him in 2024.
According to The Athletic’s Paul Dehner, Mixon will be released if he doesn’t accept a pay cut ahead of next season.
“His next steps involve the conclusion of the aggravated menacing case refiled against him by the Cincinnati Police Department and negotiation of a pay cut the team is expected to ask him to either accept or be let go,” Dehner wrote in a recent article outlining the future for the Bengals as it pertains to the team’s ground game.
Extending Joe Burrow is the team’s priority right now and whatever they pay him could pass the deal Jalen Hurts just received from the Philadelphia Eagles. They could save some money by cutting Mixon, but they would prefer keeping him on a less expensive contract.
