One day after San Francisco 49ers’ star Nick Bosa signed the largest deal in NFL history for a defensive player, Cincinnati Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in league history.
On Wednesday, the 49ers signed the reigning Defensive Player of the Year to a five-year extension worth $170 million. During the NFL Kickoff Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions, it was announced that Burrow and the Bengals agreed to a five-year deal worth $275 million.
According to 49ers’ writer David Lombardi of The Athletic, Burrow sent his former Ohio State teammate a simple text message with the eyes emoji to let Bosa know that he was about to sign a record-setting extension.
Burrow and Bosa were teammates at Ohio State from 2016 to 2017, until the former transferred to LSU to become their starting quarterback. One year after the 49ers took Bosa second overall in 2019, Burrow went first overall to the Cincinnati Bengals.
It won’t be long until Burrow and Bosa meet each other on the field in a highly-anticipated bout, either. The Bengals will visit the 49ers at Levi’S Stadium in Week 8 on Oct. 29 in a potential preview of Super Bowl 58.
The Bengals open their season with a road contest against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, while the 49ers will kick off their campaign with an away game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
