There was a brief major scare across the Cincinnati Bengals’ organization on Thursday, when Joe Burrow went down during a training camp drill.
As you can see in the video below, Burrow pulled up and immediately went down to the ground during a scrambling play. The fourth-year quarterback had to be carted off the field, and head coach Zac Taylor subsequently announced that Burrow suffered a calf strain.
Dr. David Chao, who worked as the San Diego Chargers’ team doctor for 17 years, provided insight on Burrow’s injury. Chao regularly shares analysis on sports-related injuries through his popular Twitter account, @ProFootball Doc.
Dr. Chao assured that it’s not an ACL injury for Burrow, and that it looked like a right calf muscle strain. He added that Burrow may “miss significant training camp time.”

Non-contact injuries are always scary in football, so it’s no wonder that many fans immediately feared the worst after the video of Burrow’s injury was leaked. Fortunately, the No. 1 pick of 2020 avoided a catastrophic and potential season-ending injury.
Burrow suffered season-ending ACL and MCL tears in a game against the Washington Football Team in his 2020 rookie year. Burrow has missed just one game over the last two years, and that was a meaningless Week 18, 2021 contest against the Cleveland Browns. Burrow was dealing with a knee injury and sat that game as a precaution.
