Jets undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson became a trending topic on a night that should’ve been about Aaron Rodgers playing his first game.
The New York Jets’ season opener against the Buffalo Bills started in the worst way possible, with Aaron Rodgers leaving with an injured ankle just four snaps into their first drive. It appeared he was done for the night and the home team would go out with a loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Fortunately for the Jets’ defense, Josh Allen could not stop completing passes to them to the tune of three interceptions.
A few hours later, Jets fans would be going insane with rookie Xavier Gipson returning a punt 65 yards to the house for a walk-off touchdown a few minutes into overtime.
After the game, Gipson was summoned to speak in an interview and Joe Buck couldn’t help but bring up the fact that the rookie called his mom to inform her he had made the Jets while mentioning she was in the midst of getting an oil change.

Hilarious.
Gipson has been one of the great stories of summer for the Jets, featured on the final HBO episode of “Hard Knocks’’ when he was called into the office of general manager Joe Douglas, who told him he’d made the team in an emotional moment.
Gipson’s TD return was the difference in the Jets’ 22-16 win over the Bills to make them 1-0 on a night when quarterback Aaron Rodgers was lost for what is expected to be the season with a ruptured left Achilles.
It was a nice end to a night where the rest of the season has a major question mark to it.
