J.J. Watt announced on Tuesday that this would be his last NFL season during a post on social media. It seemed to come out of nowhere.
During his press conference on Wednesday, the future hall of fame defensive player spoke more into his decision to step away from the game.,
“It feels like the right time,” Watt said. “I’ve put so much into the game and the wins and the losses, the mental stress and passion that comes with it, it just weighs on you. It’s heavy, I mean, it’s really heavy.”
Watt’s 9.5 sacks this season are the most he’s had since recording 16 in the 2018 season. If he doesn’t record another in the final two games, Watt will end with 111.5 in his career.
His 3.0 sacks on Dec. 18 earned him $900,000 in incentives. Not a bad payday to go out on. If Watt earns another half-sack in his final two games, he will earn an extra $1 million.
Watt spent his first 10 seasons with the Houston Texans, who drafted him 11th overall in 2011. It hasn’t been confirmed but it is expected that he will sign a one day contract and retire with the team. The five-time All-Pro first-teamer led the NFL in sacks in both 2012 and 2015 with 20.5 and 17.5.
