In the season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans, controversy hit the field before the game actually started when Chiefs fans could be heard booing as the two teams locked arms to show racial unity.
Texans defensive end JJ Watt who was right in the middle of the action, reacted to hearing those boos from the field.
He pointed out that the locking of arms wasn’t a protest against any flag.
“The moment of unity I personally thought was good. I mean the booing during that moment was unfortunate. I don’t fully understand that. There was no flag involved. There was nothing involved other than two teams coming together to show unity.”
Watt has been one of the most outspoken NFL players on the hot topic of racial injustice and police brutality, speaking out less than a week after George Floyd’s death earlier this year:

“I have never had to feel that fear for my life. I have never had to experience a situation where I felt threatened simply because of the color of my skin. I can’t sit here and pretend to know what that feels like. But I can understand and acknowledge that it’s wrong and that nobody should ever feel discriminated against because of the color of their skin. Racism is a problem and silence won’t solve it.”
