JJ Watt is a big man, but not even he could contain his emotions during a recent team meeting.
The Arizona Cardinals star shocked everybody by announcing that Sunday would be his final game, so the Cardinals got into overdrive by creating a video fro him. It was a surprise video that showed his family and players that included Tom Brady and Peyton Manning saying nothing but nice things towards him and wishing him well in retirement.
Watt could audibly be heard crying his eyes out.
His career ended with an emotional goodbye fitting for the end of the career of one of the NFL’s best defensive players. Watt managed to go out still playing at a high level, adding two more sacks to his career total in the Arizona Cardinals’ 38-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Even the 49ers fans gave him a standing ovation when he got subbed out of the game. In that moment, Watt waved up to his family in a suite as he walked off and embraced coach Kliff Kingsbury and his Cardinals teammates.
“I could not have asked for the way that it happened tonight,” Watt said. “I wish it was a win. But the way the fans here acted, the way the 49ers acted, it was a little bit reminiscent of my last game at Wisconsin. It was really special. It felt right, and it still feels right right now.”
