On the outside looking in, it appears that the quarterback situation in San Francisco is going to be quite awkward. The 49ers plan to enter the 2021 season with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter, but the team did send three first-round draft picks to the Miami Doplhins to move up to the No. 3 spot this year.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out that they were going for a quarterback, and that they did when they selected Trey Lance of North Dakota State on Thursday night.
49ers reporter Keiana Martin said Jimmy G asked for Trey Lance’s phone number as soon as the selection was made.
Shanahan referred to Lance as “a very good backup” in an interview on ESPN and said the starting job is Garoppolo’s.
“It’s going to be very hard for a rookie to come in and beat Jimmy Garoppolo out. He’s a very good player,” Shanahan said. “That’s why I like the situation that we are in. Now, we’ll see where Trey’s at. We’ll see how he does at OTAs. I love that we’re getting those. I love that he’s going to be here tomorrow. But Jimmy’s our quarterback right now.”
Trey has only played in nineteen games and attempted only 318 passes. He will eventually take over for Jimmy G, but the time is clearly not right now.
