Jimmy Garoppolo is no longer a member of the San Francisco 49ers after he took his talents t Las Vegas and signed with the Raiders. Now that he is free from the previous organization, he can speak freely on certain topics.
This week, he spoke about how he truly felt when the 49ers traded several picks in the 2021 NFL Draft to move up and select Trey Lance with the third pick.
“Yeah, the (2021 season) was real awkward,” Garoppolo told Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle. “That was tougher than this past year, honestly. You’re always gonna be dealt a hard hand at some point, and you’ve just got to make the best of it, and that’s what I’ve tried to do. That was a hard time. But I had some good people around me to lean on.
“The brothers in the locker room, those guys played a big role. I don’t think the fans always saw all that stuff, but those guys really picked me up when I was down sometimes.
“That’s why I love those guys in the locker room. All the crap that we went through for four to five years, whatever it was, we all stayed together in the locker room, and I thought that’s what made us such a tight group.”
Uncertainly at quarterback can be a crippling condition for an NFL franchise. The Las Vegas Raiders thought they addressed the position when the organization signed Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency, but he is still recovering from March surgery to repair the broken left foot he suffered last season.
Garoppolo suffered the injury to his left foot while playing against the Dolphins. That injury essentially knocked Garoppolo for the remainder of the season. Jimmy G being out due to injuries became the staple of his time while in the Bay Area. Now he is starting with his next team with the same problem.
He has missed 31 regular-season games since being traded to San Francisco and suffered three season-ending injuries, including a torn ACL in 2018 and a broken ankle in 2020.
Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.5 million deal with the Raiders, bonuses included. It includes $33.75 million in guarantees.
