The Las Vegas Raiders are off to a 2-3 start to the 2023 season after making a big decision at quarterback.
The Raiders decided to bench Derek Carr before the playoffs last term, with the QB now with the New Orleans Saints. Carr hasn’t set the world alight over there, which makes it so that the Raiders don’t look totally stupid. But his replacement, Jimmy Garoppolo, isn’t having the best campaign either.
Garopollo has thrown for 917 yards, six touchdowns, and seven interceptions in four outings, having missed the game against the Los Angeles Chargers. And his seven INTs mark the most in the league to date, with Sam Howell, Mac Jones, Daniel Jones, and Jordan Love all having thrown six.
According to the NFL Rumors account on X, Garoppolo has “been mentioned as a trade candidate.”
It would come as a surprise should the Raiders decide to put an end to the experiment this early, despite the slow start. But they did bench Carr while they were still mathematically within range of qualifying for the playoffs last season.
The New England Patriots are being tipped to go for the QB should he become available ahead of the deadline as Jones doesn’t appear to be able to get the job done.

Pats head coach Bill Belichick, who drafted Garoppolo in 2014, had some high praise for the QB in the buildup to their clash this Sunday.
“I mean he only played in a game and a half here, not very much. But we saw Jimmy every day. We saw the talent and the ability to be a starting quarterback,” Belichick noted. “That’s what he was drafted for and that’s what he is. He’s had a good career. Happy for him.”
