Deebo Samuel was the heart and soul of the 49ers’ offense in 2021, racking up 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns.
That heart and soul might be gone for the upcoming season and more as the WR officially demanded a trade away from the team.
Jimmy Garoppolo, who is expected to be traded as well, recently appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio and gave his take on the matter. Garoppolo called Samuel “one of the best football players” he has ever been around.
Garoppolo also said that Samuel is going to get paid big time, regardless if he stays in the Bay Area or not.
“I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes and what the reasons are for everything, but what they’d be getting in Deebo is one of the best football players and one of the best guys I’ve ever been with,” Garoppolo said. “I’ve been with Deebo since he was a rookie, so I’ve seen him evolve and grow. The way he set the tone for us in practice, the games, the meeting rooms, whatever it is – he puts his heart into it.
“You have to appreciate a guy like that. He’s a teammate who is going to put it all out on the line for you. However this whole thing works out for him, he deserves his money. He’s going to get it, one way or another.”
If the 49ers refuse to honor Samuel’s request, there’s not much else he can do. If he were to hold out this season, his contract would toll, keeping him under the 49ers team control for an additional season under his rookie-scale contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers have been listed as potential landing spots for Samuel.
