The Las Vegas Raiders had a major shift in their quarterback room this offseason by moving on from Derek Carr and opting for Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency. However, the 49ers quarterback is coming off another injury-plagued season where he missed the bulk of the year due to a foot injury.
This past week, The Athletic reported that Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo underwent surgery on his injured left foot after signing with the team.
The team reportedly knew about his foot issue before agreeing to a contract and made sure to address it in the deal.
The clause regarding the injury was necessary because Garoppolo did not pass his physical exam, so he agreed that he understands he is at a higher risk of increased injury to his left foot.
The Raiders also have the ability to cut Garoppolo outright “for any reason related to the Waiver and Release attached as Addendum G,” according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
The clause becomes null and void if Garoppolo is on the team’s roster two days after the team’s final game of the 2023 season.

Garoppolo’s original contract included a $11.25 million signing bonus and a basic salary of $11.25 million for 2023. Because of his foot injury, the Raiders waived his signing bonus and moved it to his base pay, putting him at $22.5 million in 2023. This move prevents the team from having to pay money up front before Garoppolo undergoes a physical. He will not receive any of the money unless he does so.
Garoppolo had the same injury that terminated his 2022 season with the 49ers, breaking his left foot against the Dolphins in Week 13.
Things could change drastically for both parties if Jimmy G is cut. Currently, Brian Hoyer, Aidan O’Connell, and Chase Garbers are the other quarterback on Las Vegas’ roster.
