Following the San Francisco 49ers’ trade of Quarterback Trey Lance, former San Francisco Star Jimmy Garoppolo shared his not so glowing review of the situation.
After being trading Jimmy G in the 2023 off-season, the 49ers traded former #3 pick Lance from the team, a player who was heir apparent to Garoppolo. Jimmy G would talk about the weird way the team handled the situation.
Jimmy G’s comments reflect much of the NFL’s perception of the 49ers off-season. Though incumbent starter Brock Purdy, the 2022 NFL Draft’s Mr. Irrelevant, earned his spot on the team during extended play time last season, the immediate trading of both the previous starter and his high-upside successor does come off as strange.
The 2022 49ers are a team that had a hard time keeping quarterbacks on the field, losing Jimmy G, Lance, and later on Purdy to injuries, though they were still good enough to finish in the 2nd seed of the 2023 playoffs.
Garoppolo, now starting for the Las Vegas Raiders, led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2020, where he lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Lance is now a 3rd string Quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.

The way the 49ers have handled this off-season doesn’t appear to be the direction of a potential contender, but they look to move ahead and compete for the NFC crown and a place in Super Bowl LVIII.
