Jim Nantz has addressed a long-standing rumor about colleague Tony Romo as they kick off their eighth season together in the CBS broadcast booth.
In early 2020, CBS signed Romo to a lucrative 10-year contract extension worth $180 million after his initial three-year deal expired. In November of that year, it was reported by Andrew Marchand (then working for the New York Post) that Jim Nantz wanted to top Romo’s $17.5 million salary.
Nantz addressed the report with none other than Mr. Marchand (now with The Athletic) himself during an appearance on the latter’s podcast.
“Maybe it was the headline writer that did it, that said Nantz is demanding Romo money. I swear on my life that I never did that, nor did I demand. ‘I want Romo money!’ I never said that.”
Though Nantz tried to ease the tension by telling Marchand that he “never” wrote it, the journalist defended his initial report. Marchand asked Nantz if he felt he deserved Romo’s contract since he’s the top announcer at CBS, noting that the latter also does golf and NCAA work.
“I thought the two were unrelated,” Jim Nantz told Marchand. “What was really important to me was the longevity part of it.”

In 2021, it was reported that Nantz and CBS agreed to a new deal, though the exact dollars weren’t known. Marchand reported at the time that it was an increase from Nantz’s previous $6.5 million salary.

Citing sources, Marchand also reported that Jim Nantz’s new deal with the media giant was around $10.5 million annually. Nantz has been with CBS since 1985.
Romo and Nantz called their third Super Bowl together in February, with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime. They also called Super Bowls 51 and 53.
Jim Nantz & Tony Romo Will Call Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers Debut
CBS has assigned its top commentary team to the Los Angeles Chargers’ home game against the AFC West rival Las Vegas Raiders. Though this matchup isn’t all that exciting compared to other showdowns, CBS obviously wanted Nantz and Romo to be there for Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers’ debut.
Sunday will mark Harbaugh’s first NFL game in 10 years. The former San Francisco 49ers HC was at Michigan from 2015 to 2023, leading the school to a national title in his final season at the helm.
