New Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is understood to have his sights set on a star running back who’s set to be a free agent this offseason.
Harbaugh took the Chargers job after leading the Michigan Wolverines to a National Championship in January, with his success largely down to the exploits of running back Blake Corum. And, with the Chargers likely to lose Austin Ekeler in free agency, Harbaugh is keen on Saquon Barkley.
That is according to former Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf, who was teammates with Harbaugh during their playing days and remains a good friend.
“I do think that Saquon Barkley is going to be at the top of his list in terms of what he wants to do with the running back position with him being a free agent,” Leaf said on ‘Good Morning Football’ this Friday. “It’s something I know that Jim Harbaugh wants to do, he wants to run the football and he wants to use those guys down the field with play action.”
Before taking the job, Harbaugh was reported to have waxed lyrical over quarterback Justin Herbert, telling Mike Greenberg he thought Herbert was the best QB in the NFL.
Given that he may prioritize running the football, it will be interesting to see how the signal-caller fits into his plans.
