New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson will be wearing a different jersey number next season after playing with the No. 17 his first two terms.
The wideout is going to be taking to the field in the No. 5 jersey in 2024, having worn the number back in his Ohio State days.
Jets punter Thomas Morstead posted a photo of himself handing Wilson a No. 5 jersey on Monday night. “Honored to pass #5 to GW,” he wrote as the caption.
This development doesn’t come from left field, though. Wilson had announced back in April that the 2023 season would be the last in which he would wear the No. 17 as he had plans to revert to his old college number.
The 23-year-old had a great second season for the Jets, although they failed to make the playoffs, as he caught 95 passes for 1,042 yards and three touchdowns. That followed a first year in which he was named Offensive Rookie of the Year after leading all first-year players in receptions with 83, receiving yards with 1,103, and pass targets with 147.
The team had lots of difficulty at the quarterback position after losing Aaron Rodgers in the first game of the campaign, starting four different QBs. They will hope to have the veteran for a full season in 2024, which should benefit Wilson immensely.
