ESPN commentator Troy Aikman has come under fire as a player for the New York Jets has called him out for making up a fake quote about him.
Speaking during ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback claimed that defensive lineman Quinnen Williams has referred to himself as “the highest-paid decoy in football.”
Williams, though, has denied ever saying this, adding he’s never spoken to Aikman and finds the comment “upsetting” and “weird” as the announcer did not attribute it to himself but implied that it came from Williams.
The segment came up during the third quarter of the broadcast featuring the Jets and the Los Angeles Chargers and was centered on Williams’ impact on the defense after he signed a four-year deal worth $96 million in July.
The DL recorded 12 sacks for the team last season and has only made half a sack in 2023 but has still been great as he attracts double teams that open holes up for his teammates

Jets head coach Robert Saleh claims that sacks are “overrated” and don’t dictate how good defenders put pressure on a quarterback, though they help defensive players earn massive deals.
“Unfortunately, we live in a society where sack production is the measure of how good a player is and it’s not even close,” Saleh explained. “[Williams is] wrecking games.”
Maybe Aikman heard the comment from someone else and Williams is upset about it getting out to the public as it is a bad look for the Jets. Or did he simply make it up? We might never know.
