With Aaron Rodgers out for the season due to an Achilles tear he suffered in Week 1, the New York Jets have settled on a third permanent captain for the rest of 2023.
And it isn’t quarterback Zach Wilson.
Per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has been named the Jets’ third permanent captain alongside linebacker C.J. Mosley and cornerback/special teams player Justin Hardee.
This is noteworthy because as Cimini noted, Wilson was the team’s offensive captain a year ago as well as their co-captain with wideout Corey Davis in 2021.
The decision to not name an offensive captain, let alone assigning the C” to Wilson, strongly indicates that the Jets are quickly losing trust in their starting quarterback. Wilson has struggled mightily thus far in 2023 with a 52.4 completion percentage and 467 passing yards with two touchdowns against four interceptions.

Many have been calling for the Jets to bring in a veteran quarterback to replace Wilson, but head coach Robert Saleh has curiously decided to stand with the 2021 second overall pick. Another bad outing against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday, however, may prompt the Jets to make the change.
