If you ask most people to describe the current state of the New York Jets, they’ll probably all tell you the same thing: “This team is a quarterback away from contending.”
The Jets just invested a second-overall pick on a signal-caller when they took Zack Wilson in 2021. And while the front office and coaching staff may want to try and make it work with the 23-year-old, the Jets players have other ideas.
According to a recent report from Pro Football Network’s Tony Paulie, Jets players were asked for their thoughts on the team’s quarterback position during exit interviews, and several of them didn’t believe he was the right guy for the job.

Several players were critical of LaFleur’s game planning and inability to make halftime adjustments. When it comes to Wilson, several players said the second pick of the 2021 NFL Draft is not the quarterback to lead the franchise moving forward — they feel the team should stick with Mike White or trade for a veteran.
Wilson struggled mightily during his sophomore season, failing to show any development in his game while rubbing his teammates the wrong way for his lack of accountability and drive.
While the Jets were able to go 5-4 in Wilson’s nine starts, it was largely due to the defense and run game—and definitely not the quarterback, who had six touchdowns along with seven interceptions and a 54.5 completion percentage.
