It’s been more than two weeks now since Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers announced his intentions to join the New York Jets on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Rodgers stated at the time that the Packers and Jets just had to work out the trade compensation. Since the deal has yet to materialize, it’s easy to understand why some Jets fans may be growing anxious on the Rodgers trade front.
But while speaking at Tuesday’s league meetings, team owner Woody Johnson expressed optimism that the Jets will eventually get the four-time league MVP and future Hall of Famer, via Brian Costello of the New York Times:
“I think we’re anxious. We’re anxious, I guess. We look forward. We’re optimistic. We have a plan. We’re willing to stick with our plan. I don’t think anybody is hyperventilating.”
The Jets had hoped that BYU product Zach Wilson, the No. 2 selection of the 2021 NFL Draft, would fix the franchise’s never-ending search for a true franchise quarterback. But the organization grew impatient with Wilson rather quickly, and they’re clearly content on starting over at the position.
Rodgers requested a trade from the Packers to years ago, but the two sides managed to make amends in time for the 2021 season. Last year, Rodgers agreed to three-year contract extension worth $150.8 million, seemingly keeping him in Green Bay for life.
But the Packers played well below expectations and missed the postseason, finishing with an 8-9 record. It now looks as though the Packers’ Week 18 home loss to the Detroit Lions was indeed Rodgers’ final moment with the organization.
