On Monday, New York Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas provided an update on the team’s pursuit of Aaron Rodgers while also ruling out the possibility of chasing another big-named quarterback.
Two weeks ago, the Green Bay Packers’ star quarterback announced that he plans to play for the New York Jets in 2023. Rodgers added that the two clubs just had to work out the compensation, but two weeks later, he remains with the Cheeseheads.
Speaking to reporters at Monday’s yearly league meeting, Douglas encouraged Jets fans that the club is still “optimistic” about landing Rodgers, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini:
“Obviously, we’re not where we need to be yet, but I feel like we’re in a good place…There’s not a ton of urgency from our standpoint right now. But still very optimistic.”
Douglas also stated that “there’s no hard deadline” for the Jets to complete the trade, per Cimini. The 46-year-old, in his fifth season with the Jets, also made it clear that the club will not be pursuing Baltimore Ravens’ QB Lamar Jackson. The latter revealed on Monday that he asked the team for a trade on Mar. 2:
“First of all, Lamar Jackson is a fantastic player, but where we stand is, it would be disingenuous and negotiating in bad faith if we went down that path. We have our plan, we have our process and we’re sticking to that…We’re never going to operate in bad faith.”
Rodgers signed a three-year contract extension with the Packers last offseason, seemingly committing the remainder of his career to Green Bay. But the Packers played well below expectations last season and finished a disappointing 8-9, missing the postseason for the first time since 2018.

Rodgers actually requested a trade from the Pack back in 2021 ahead of the draft, but the two sides wound up making amends for a couple of more years. The four-time league MVP has had a wonderful Hall of Fame career in Titletown, but it appears to only be a matter of time until he’s wearing a different form of green.
