The New York Jets screwed running back Breece Hall out of a 1,000-yard season by making a silly mistake in Week 18.
Hall made 17 carries for 178 yards against the New England Patriots on Sunday, also scoring a touchdown in the 17-3 win. He needed just six yards to secure a first 1,000-yard rushing season in the NFL but wasn’t able to get it for a ridiculous reason.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh has admitted that the coaching staff was aware of how close the player was to the mark and ultimately got the math wrong.
“Yeah, we were aware,” he told reporters on Monday. “One of our mathematicians was wrong. We thought he got it, but then we were 10 yards off. But we were trying to get it for him on that last run; otherwise we would have taken a knee.”
Hall, who ended up with 994 rushing yards, didn’t seem all that bothered about not getting to that 1K mark.
“I really wasn’t upset, because everybody in the league that watches me knows that I have the potential to be probably the best back in the NFL,” he said after the game.

This season was the running back’s first healthy one as he tore his ACL in 2022. It would have been nice to get to that milestone, but he’s going to have to try again next year.
