Jerry Rice has played with MVP quarterbacks throughout his career, so he knows what a good QB looks like.
Rice knows good quarterbacks when he sees them, which is why 49ers fans should be excited about his latest comments regarding Trey Lance.
Rice and Lance filmed a commercial together for Rice’s G.O.A.T. Fuel energy drinks. He came away very impressed with how the 49ers’ youngster throws the ball, according to Matt Maiocco of NBS Sports.
“If you’re like 20 yards down the field or more, it’s great to have all of that velocity…But those underneath passes is where you need to tone it down just a bit, and that’s an area he has to work on because he’s a gunslinger. Those short passes underneath, you need to dial it back a little bit.
“It’s a very catchable ball. Joe was more about timing. Steve had a little bit of a more-stronger arm. But It was a different spin on that ball also that was a little more difficult, But I would say Trey, his ball is very catchable.”
Lance doesn’t have many snaps to work with over the last two seasons, throwing just 101 passes combined during his rookie campaign and his final season at North Dakota State.
Serving as the backup to Jimmy Garoppolo in his rookie season, Lance completed 41 of 71 passes (57.7%) for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, while rushing 38 times for 168 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers are taking a risk with switching from Garoppolo to Lance, as Garoppolo’s .702 win percentage is behind only Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Lamar Jackson.

While Rice is sold on Lance, the greatest wide receiver ever believes Shanahan should let him and Garoppolo compete for the job.
“Let them compete,” Rice said. “Bill Walsh always opened the door for competition. Let them compete and the best guy should be the starter.”
