Former NFL Network reporter Jim Trotter claimed in a lawsuit filed last week that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made racist remarks in a conversation between the two in 2021.
According to the lawsuit, Trotter planned to share on “NFL NOW” a racist statement made by Jones at the 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game between the Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jones allegedly said, “If Blacks feel some kind of way, they should buy their own team and hire who they want to hire.” Trotter had the following rebuttal to Jones’s statement.
This week, Jones is now saying he wants to increase minority involvement at the ownership level in NFL franchises and he will walk across Texas to make it happen.
“Some of the representation is not accurate. Just not accurate,” Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “But I do and want to and have worked very hard to get minority ownership in the NFL. Spent a lot of time, and I’m all for that, of course. Jim’s a friend, and I think a lot of him. I hate that we’ve got some litigation and hopefully, we will address all of that, but the overall concern I would say is just not accurate.”
“I love the National Football League,” Jones said. “I love football, and if we can improve it by having people that aren’t in ownership today in ownership, I’ll walk across Texas to do it.”
Back to the lawsuit, Trotter alleges that the NFL didn’t renew his contract after he publicly asked Commissioner Roger Goodell why the league hadn’t lived up to its commitment to hire more Black coaches.

Trotter is seeking damages to be determined at trial, and in addition, he wants “the imposition of a court-ordered monitor to review the NFL’s policies and/or practices and implement necessary changes with respect to the hiring, retention, and advancement of Black people throughout all levels of the NFL organization and hierarchy, including at NFL Media, the NFL league office and within NFL teams.”
As arguably the NFL’s most powerful owner, nobody has a better opportunity to affect change and lead by example than Jerry Jones.
In the meantime, Jerry is likely excited about his 2-0 Dallas Cowboys who are looking like serious contender in 2023. Granted, they have beat two teams with questionable starters but you can only face who you have in front of you.
