Jerry Jones is the only NFL owner who carries the official general manager title of his team. Though his son, Stephen, has plenty of input on team personnel decisions, it’s been known for a while that Jerry has the final say on all matters.
Dov Kleiman shared a behind-the-scenes video of the Cowboys’ draft room during round one on Apr. 27. As you can see in the clip below, Jones is adamant about the team using its first-round pick on Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith:
For all the criticism Jones gets as an owner and GM, his track record at the draft speaks for itself. From 2010 to 2021, only two of his first-round picks (Morris Claiborne in 2012 and Taco Charlton in 2021) did not become Pro Bowlers.
Not to mention that Jones has found his fair share of impact players outside of round one, namely DeMarcus Lawrence (a 2014 second-rounder), Dak Prescott (a fourth-round pick in 2016), Michael Gallup (81st overall in 2018), Trevon Diggs (a 2020 second-rounder), Tony Pollard (a 2019 fourth-round pick) and Donovan Wilson (2019 sixth-rounder).
But of course, the last 28 years for the Cowboys have been marred by consistent disappointment. The club hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game since 1995, the last year the franchise won the Super Bowl.
