Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones won’t fully rule out the idea of bringing back free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott.
Five months ago, the Cowboys released the three-time Pro Bowler and two-time rushing champion from his contract in a cap-saving move. Fast forward to the start of August, and “Zeke” remains a free agent as preseason play draws closer.
But during an appearance on 105.3 The FAN (via Jon Machota of The Athletic), Jones kept the door open on a potential reunion with Elliot, saying it’s “not ruled out at all.”
The Cowboys signed Ronald Jones for running back depth behind Tony Pollard, but he was handed a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s PEDs policy. With Jones suspended, bringing back Elliott certainly makes sense for Dallas.
Though Elliott is well past his playing prime, he still put up 876 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 15 games last season. Considering that he was sharing carries with Pollard, it’s clear that Elliott can still push for 1,000 yards rushing.
On the weekend, Elliott visited with the New England Patriots. He was also seen having dinner with quarterback Mac Jones, but Elliott left the meeting with the Pats without a deal.
