The Dallas Cowboys 2023 offseason was quiet until this weekend.
When the news dropped Saturday that the Cowboys were acquiring quarterback Trey Lance from the 49ers, fans began wondering what current Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott’s reaction would be.
On Saturday, Jerry Jones revealed he hadn’t talked to the two-time Pro Bowler at all.
“No, we, we didn’t tell anybody until we did it, period,” Jones said Saturday, regarding the Lance move before the Cowboys final preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
“There was nobody that knew about it. We told [Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy] after we had done it, but my point is we just wanted to get it done. Again, we didn’t waste any time. My point is … we didn’t want them to hang up.”
When asked directly whether or not Jones had spoken to Prescott prior to adding Lance, the Cowboys owner said Saturday, “No, I have not.”
Even though other teams have told their incumbent starting quarterbacks about acquiring other young players at the position, Jones did not do such a thing with Dak Prescott.
Whenever Lance and Prescott first cross paths in the Cowboys quarterback room, it won’t be their first interaction. The two actually met two years ago in the lead-up to the 2021 NFL Daft.

You have to know that this may serve as a huge distraction if Dak Prescott starts to play badly and talks begin to surface about whether they should go with Trey Lance. For now, Lance is likely more focused on trying to get his first true chance to show what he’s got and rebound from having the bust title on his name.
As for how long Lance will be a member of the Cowboys’ quarterbacks room remains to be seen. The former third overall pick is under contract for at least two more seasons, 2023 and 2024, and Dallas will have to make a call next offseason about picking up his fully guaranteed fifth-year option for 2025.
