It’s rare for NFL owners to admit that they view a rival club as the team to beat, especially someone as competitive as Jerry Jones.
Fair or not, Jones and Cowboys fans are in “Super Bowl or bust” mode every year. But ahead of Dallas’ highly-touted Week 5 contest against the San Francisco 49ers, Jones willingly admitted that it’s not his Cowboys who are “most likely” to win Super Bowl 58.
Speaking on “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 The Fan (h/t ESPN) Jones stated that the 49ers are “most likely” to win it all. Jones even expressed hope that the two clubs will meet in the postseason for the third straight year:
“They are, right now, probably the most likely team to go win the Super Bowl, but in order for them to get there, they have to go by us, hopefully two times if that’s the way it falls in the playoffs and we’re in the playoffs, of course…
“But the bottom line is you’re playing the best, you don’t need the game to tell you you’re playing the best, but you need the game to show you how you stack up against the best.”
The 49ers (4-0) are one of the league’s last two undefeated teams, along with the Philadelphia Eagles. Those two teams faced off in last year’s NFC Championship Game, and both entered 2023 as the consensus favorites to win the conference.

The Cowboys have played like a legitimate title contender through four weeks, posting a +83 point differential (second-best in football) while allowing a league-low 10.3 points per game.
But Dallas, of course, has been notable by consistent postseason meltdowns in the 21st century. Their last two seasons ended at the hands of the 49ers, so Sunday will give them a golden opportunity to make a statement and prove that this isn’t the so-called “Same old Cowboys.”
