San Francisco 49ers’ general manager John Lynch figures to be one of the busiest executives leading up to the Oct. 31 trade deadline.
Lynch’s 49ers enter Week 8 with a 5-2 record, just one game back of the Philadelphia Eagles for top spot in the NFC. Last year, Lynch’s blockbuster trade for star running back Christian McCaffrey paid major dividends, so of course he’ll be motivated to add more at this year’s deadline.
One of the top names on the trade block is Carolina Panthers’ safety Jeremy Chinn, a pending free agent. With the Panthers holding football’s worst record at 0-6, they stand to be a hot seller at the deadline.
The 49ers and Panthers agreed to the monumental McCaffrey trade a year ago. This time, the two sides should be motivated to complete a trade involving Chinn.
Chinn will be out for up to six weeks with a quad injury, but that shouldn’t stop the 49ers from pursuing him. He can rest up and focus on getting close to full strength for the postseason.
Entering Week 7, San Fran has allowed an NFC-low 15.6 points per game. But you can never have too many game-changing defenders in today’s NFL. And Chinn would fit tremendously in a defense led by Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, Javon Hargrave and Talanoa Hufanga.

The 49ers can offer the Panthers a conditional 2024 third-round pick that becomes a second if they reach the Super Bowl plus a 2025 fifth-round pick.
Carolina recoups some of the lost picks in the trade to move up for Bryce Young, while the 49ers get another do-it-all defensive back in Chinn (one pass defended, one sack and 23 combined tackles) to bolster their championship hopes.
It’d be a win-win trade for all parties involved.
