When Dan Campbell was appointed head coach of the Detroit Lions, Jemele Hill pointed out how black head coaches were losing jobs to a guy like him because of the way he acted during his press conference.
The franchise is now in the NFC Championship game for the first time since 1991, and the second time in its entire history. It is safe to say that Campbell has been a success with the Lions.
In each of the last few seasons, there has been some criticism of a lack of NFL head coaching opportunities going to Black coaches. That has changed a lot in the past two years.
On Thursday, that trend continued when the Atlanta Falcons hired Raheem Morris to be their head coach.
The NFL has seen six head coaches hired this cycle, and four are coaches of color. Three of the coaches hired are Black.
Hill took to X and noted that last year DeMeco Ryans was the only African-American hired but now there have already been three and the offseason hasn’t actually started.
“Last NFL offseason, DeMeco Ryans was the only Black coach hired out of 5 openings. This offseason, 3 Black coaches have been hired as head coaches already. It’s giving progress?” Hill wrote.
