In the wake of more protests in Minneapolis, first lady Melania Trump took to Twitter on Friday and offered her first public sentiments nearly four days after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers.
“Our country allows for peaceful protests, but there is no reason for violence,” tweeted Trump. “I’ve seen our citizens unify & take care of one another through COVID19 & we can’t stop now. My deepest condolences to the family of George Floyd. As a nation, let’s focus on peace, prayers & healing.”
The first part of that tweet was problematic since Colin Kaepernick and others engaged in peaceful protests back in 2016 by kneeling during the National Anthem, only to get blasted by the country as well as the President.
Jemele noticed this as well, which is why she brought him up in response to that tweet.

Colin Kaepernick changed his life and career based on his 2016 protest against police attacks on African-American men. His actions sparked severe backlash including verbal attacks from then presidential candidate Donald Trump and cause the league to create and revise policies for protocol during the anthem.
Kaepernick has expressed a desire to resume playing, but after leaving the 49ers after the 2016 season, no team has signed him. He is widely believed to be blackballed.
